Werder Bremen are based in Bremen, in the northwest German federal state of the same name. The club was founded on 4 February 1899 as Fußballverein Werder by a group of sixteen vocational high school students who had won a prize of sports equipment to set them on their way. The club dropped out of the Bundesliga for the first and only time, being relegated to the Bundesliga 2 -Nord for the 1980-81 season after a 17th place finish.
Relative success followed and in the following seasons the team's performance stabilized as they regularly finished in the upper half of the table. In 2004, they managed to take both the Bundesliga championship and the German Cup – one of only three German sides to make the double. Their performance qualified them for 2004-05 Champions League play and they advanced to the Round of 16 before a dismal exit on a 10:2 aggregate to French side Olympique Lyonnais.
With 4 Bundesliga titles and 5 German cups, Werder are rightly considered one of Germany’s top clubs.

There are night bus' or trams (indicated by an "N"), through almost the whole night, but not as frequently as in daytimes (hourly). Fares on the night network are one euro in addition to normal individual, group or day fares (2008). You can buy bus tickets on the bus or tram, but is slightly cheaper to buy a set of 4 rides or a day pass for individuals or groups, or a weekly pass for individuals. Note that on trains, tickets must be purchased before you board. Taxis are found nearly everywhere and every time but they have got their price (about 1.25 EURO/km).

Rathaus (Town Hall) This is one of the finest in Europe and as such has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Building work started in 1410 and it is seen as an important display of the wealth and freedom of the city. Tours of the interior are conducted by the Tourist information office at 11am, noon, 3pm and 4pm
Dom St Petri (Cathedral of St Peter) At over 1200 years old, its huge towered façade dominates the main square and the interior is impressive with some fine painted details on the ceilings. There is a treasury displaying the collection of the cathedral. Entrance is free, for €1 you can climb the Southern Tower offering nice views over the whole city
Roland This statue on the main square is of the Knight Roland who was a protector of trade. It appears in many European cities especially those involved in the Hanseatic League. Bremen's is considered one of the finest and is included with Town Hall on the World Heritage List.
Die Bremer Stadtmusikanten (Town Musicians of Bremen) Perhaps the most well known figures associated with Bremen are the characters from the Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale; their image adorns many of the souvenirs in the city. Next to the Town Hall is a much photographed statue of them.
Böttcherstrasse The incredible Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) street that runs from the main square towards the river. There are many fine façades and courtyards all with large amounts of design detail. There is an impressive Glockenspiel that chimes at regular intervals. There are lots of shops and several Museums, including the impressive Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum. Haus Atlantis (now the Hilton) has an impressive spiral staircase just inside, at the top of which is the staggering Himmelshaal (unfortunately it is not normally open to the public).
Am Wall A lovely park next to the former defensive moat which offers a nice place to sit and relax.
Schnoor This area of twisting lanes is a lovely place to wander aimlessly looking at in the many shops and also at the world smallest hotel.
BARS
Irish Pub in Schnoor, Schnoor, Bremen Despite its small size and quaint ambience, this pub is a popular spot in the historic section of town near the river. Located off a beaten path in the small, angular streets, this bar is worth it for a good beer and a great ambience. Also serves from a light-dining menu.
Schmidt, Katharinenstrasse 2, Bremen This popular spot is located directly across from the historic Rathaus. Schmidt is a cool and calm modern café serving light fare. The eatery has weekly lunch specials and a wide selection of wines to choose from, which helps make Schmidt one of the city's favourite hot spots at night. The decor is light and airy, with black and white caricature drawings accenting the walls.
Oldies But Goodies Beat Club, Rembertiring 7/9, Bremen This club gets going from 9pm until 5am Thursday thru Saturday nights. The interior has pictures of great rock and roll favourites’ from around the world, including the great Elvis. There is a main bar at the entrance, and the tail end of a retro Cadillac gives a 1950s feel. The bar features an extensive list of beers, spirits, aperitifs, and non-alcoholic drinks, and it is located along the Breitenweg Street that has many clubs, pubs, and discos.
La Habana, Schlachte 32, Bremen This is a city centre bar with a warm and friendly feel. The theme is Cuban, and it shows through in the place's ambience and music. The fixtures and decorations are reminiscent of a sultry and jazzy Cuba on a warm, lazy night. Located on the corner of the Schlachte, this is a great place to relax and drink.
Litfass, Osterstorsteinweg 22, Bremen This trendy and very cool club in the en hip section of Viertel is a popular draw for a perfectly mixed drink and light salad. The bartenders and waiters are friendly and helpful, and the drink menu is extensive. Interestingly, they play American alternative music from the 80's and 90's. Oh-so-chic.
RESTAURANTS AND CAFES
Carvalho, Kolpingstraße 14 28195 Bremen Restaurant in the basement with fantastic bizarre atmosphere. The lower (non-smoker) area is framed by a red leather bench with wavelike, high backrests. Blue-golden walls and playful flower shaped lamps round off the romantic ambiance in which typical Tapas, unusual creations and ice cream specialties lets you forget "the world outside".
Nanking, HankenStrasse 20. Bremen No matter at what time of day, the delicious Chinese food in cozy surroundings with many aquariums is always worth your while. The menu offers everything your heart (or your hungry tummy) may desire.
Freitags Fischrestaurant & Weinbar, Böttcherstraße 3-5 Bremen Small, nice restaurant in the heart of the city, which is (still) not taken over by tourists. Here one can enjoy a quiet lunch or feast extensively for dinner. Even as menu and portions are quite straightforward the prices are moderate also. Imaginative prepared fish and a very good wine selection - frequently on demand even wine not available by the glass are also offered as such.
Maredo, Domshof 21. Bremen Respectable restaurant with extensive menu, special attention of course (as it is customary for a steak house) is put on meat dishes. Seasonal offers available I find the Late-Night-Specials are particularly good, starting at 9:30pm: Spare Ribs for 5.10 EUROS, salad buffet "All- You- Can-Eat" for 3.30 EUROS (with a main dish). Recommendation at the salad buffet: Churrasco-sauce!
Becks Bistro, Am Markt 9, Bremen This cozy bistro sits across from the Rathaus and the Dom Cathedral. The interior decor is a mixture of old and new, and the bistro's wall colors enhance its warm and inviting feel. Modern light fixtures hang from the ceiling and adorn the walls to create a charming ambience. Beck's Bistro has a weekly feature card with super menu items like grilled salmon with fresh vegetables and buttered potatoes and pasta with fresh vegetables in a basil cream sauce. In addition, the quaint bar features all kinds of spirits. Casual attire.
Alte Gilde, Ansgaritorstrasse 24, entrance on Hutfliterstrasse, Bremen Located in the shadow of the Rathaus, Alte Glide serves up traditional German fare and some not so traditional fare like cordon bleu and the Hawaiian salad. The interior has an interesting vaulted ceiling that creates a medieval feel. The extensive menu features chicken, turkey, pork, and beef entrées. Conveniently located near major historic sights and shopping areas in the Altstadt.
