RESTAURANTS AND CAFES
Davio's Address: 75 Arlington St., Back Bay, Boston, MA Tel: 617/357-4810 Location: Back Bay Eating here is like sitting at the grown-ups' table for the first time. Comfy armchairs and a grand, high-ceilinged dining room give diners a sense of self-importance. Come at lunch, like the rest of the city's power elite, for great pastas (half portions are available) and oversize salads. For dinner, those rushing off to the theatre grab a quick bite at the bar—others are in for a lengthy meal, since the kitchen's focus on sophisticated Italian cuisine makes every meal a special occasion. Metro: Arlington
Capital Grille Address: 359 Newbury St., Back Bay, Boston, MA Tel: 617 262 8900
A carnivore's utopia waits within these clubby, dark-wood walls. Steak-house staples such as cottage fries and a plump order of shrimp cocktail start things nicely, followed by succulent meats such as the 24-ounce dry-aged porterhouse. The crowd-watching is as tasty as the food: VIPs in striped suits make deals over dessert, and wives in Manolo Blahnik heels sip martinis. Metro: Hynes/ICA
Legal Sea Foods Address: 255 State St., Downtown, Boston Tel: 617/227-3115 What better place than the waterfront to build one of the snazziest branches of the local Legal Sea Foods chain? The classic and contemporary seafood preparations mirror those of the other locations, but this one's dining room is full of colourful tiles and sea-inspired sculpture. A preferred-seating list allows calls ahead. Metro: Aquarium
Silvertone Address: 69 Bromfield St., Downtown, Boston Tel: 617 338 7887 Devotees of this hip basement restaurant swear by the no-fuss options such as a truly addictive macaroni and cheese, meat loaf, and steak tips. Among the more-interesting offerings are the appetizers, such as the spicy Caesar salad, and the fish of the day, which might be trout amandine or locally caught bluefish. The wine list is compact but varied. Metro: Park St
