LOCAL ATTRACTIONS
The "Altstadt" (Old City) The oldest quarter of Hamburg and the main attraction for many tourists. The most well-known are probably the Chilehaus (Chile House) and the Kontorhäuser (Office Buildings) at Burchardplatz but also Sprinkenhof, Mohlenhof and Messberghof are popular destinations for tourists.
"Michel" Church - Hamburg's Landmark St. Michaels church, built from 1751 - 1762, is not only the most important baroque church building in northern Germany but also features the biggest German church clock. The circumferential measurements of the dial amount to more than 24 meters. Its tower, the "Michel", is 132 metres high and has a viewing platform from which you can watch Port and City undisturbed. Every day at 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. Turmblasen (tower music) takes place.
St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn There is much more to St. Pauli than strip shows and sex shops. It is a melting pot of diverse influences, trends and styles. For a long time already the "mile of sin" has not only been the address of old-established erotic establishments. More and more young people with new ideas discover the "Kiez" and the neighbouring "Schanzenviertel" as a place of pulsing scene life. At St. Pauli you find everything: commerce and erotic, kebab shops and Asia snacks, yuppie bars and punk discos, old-established inhabitants and Turkish families, trendy people and dropouts, the football club "FC St. Pauli" and the Hafenstrasse (Harbour Street).
Jungfernstieg Jungfernstieg on the Alster has been Hamburg's shopping and promenade street for a long time already. Formerly, families had a walk here on Sundays and took out their unmarried daughters ("Jungfern" = damsels). Nowadays it's all about shopping in big department stores and exquisite shops here. The passage of the Hamburger Hof is also situated at Jungfernstieg here. At this place, shopping becomes culture: the big and the small exquisite shops here almost outperform each other with their exclusive offers. Further interest along Jungfernstieg street: shoe, leather and travelling accessories, the popular "Alsterhaus" and traditional houses like the "Streit's"-cinema. And after that? Very simple, because finally the Binnenalster is directly at Jungfernstieg street where the ships are waiting for you at the Alster quay...
BARS
20 Up, Empire Riverside Hotel, Bernhard-Nocht-Straße 97, 20359 Hamburg This bar is situated on the top floor of the gleaming glass tower of the Empire Riverside Hotel. Floor to ceiling windows give you a breathtaking view of the city, waterfront and harbour (even the bathrooms offer panoramic views). Come here in the early evening and enjoy the sunset with the 20 Up's signature cocktail, the Red River Elbe, a composition of vodka, liquor 43, almond syrup and cranberry juice with fresh lime (8,50 Euro).
Atlantic Bar, Hotel Kempinski This classic bar seems to have come straight out of a 1930s Hollywood movie. Art - Deco interiors, barmen dressed to the nines, and a piano player set the mood for this elegant bar. The Hotel Kempinski is where celebrities stay when they are in Hamburg, so keep your eyes and ears open; Phil Collins once surprised guests of the Atlantic Bar with an impromptu concert. You can choose from over 200 cocktails, but the classics are what they are known for.
Bar Hamburg, Rautenbergstrasse 6, 20099 Hamburg Just next to the famous Red Light District of Hamburg is one of the chicest bars in Northern Germany. The Bar Hamburg attracts the city's rich and beautiful, making it a great place for people watching. Sit back in one of the chocolate-leather sofas or club seats and enjoy the dancing scene. Get up and get down to Hamburg's favourite DJs, who keep you moving with jazz, house, and lounge music.
Bernstein Bar, Bernstorffstrasse 103, 22767 Hamburg After a bustling day in the city, the Bernstein (“amber”) Bar is a great place to kick back. Relax on one of the plush sofas and enjoy the cosy and dark interior. On the weekends, DJs spin soul and funk, and sometimes there is live music. The crowd is young and casual, sipping the local beer, Astra. Minty rum-laden Mojitos and fresh fruit Caipirinhas are also recommended.
RESTAURANTS AND CAFES
Engel, Langer Anleger Teufelsbrück, Hamburg 22763 Engel is an attractive location: sparkling glasses on white tablecloths, floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the river. What is special about Engel is that it is actually ON the river, floating on a pontoon - if a big ship sails past, the restaurant rocks. Recipes are delicious and light, with emphasis on fresh ingredients, and the menu is renewed on a monthly basis. The restaurant is extremely popular, always full, and can be quite loud. In summer, the windows are left open, and outdoor dining is possible on the terrace. Downstairs on Engel's pontoon is the Luzifer snack bar. TRANSPORTATION: Bus 36, Bus 286 or harbour ferry to Teufelsbrück.
Das Weisse Haus, Neumühlen 50, Altona, Hamburg 22763 Tim Mälzer is Germany's answer to Jamie Oliver, the popular television chef, and the little white house next to the Museumshafen is home to one of his most successful projects. Small but exquisite, the restaurant is booked weeks in advance; there is better chance of a reservation for lunch than dinner. There are five options on the daily changing lunchtime menu; dinner guests are not presented with a menu, rather choosing the number of courses they wish. The standards of cooking and service are excellent.
Groeninger, Willy-Brandt-Straße 47, Hamburg 20457 The Groeninger cellar is doing all it can to further the very old German tradition of the small brewery. Situated directly opposite the picturesque Speicherstadt (a harbour storage district), the cellar is dominated by a vast copper vat; long wooden tables are in keeping with the theme. Specialty of the house is, obviously, the excellent beer from the micro-brewery. Various platters are available in accompaniment, several of which have to be booked ahead: most are based on meat, some include fish. On Saturdays, guests are invited to barbecue their hunks of meat or sausages themselves.
Ratsweinkeller, Gr Johannisstraße 2, Hamburg 20457 High vaulted ceilings, massive arches, and reverential stained glass windows add to the aura of this international restaurant. Ratsweinkeller Hamburg has been called the "pride of Hamburg." Simple wooden tables hold simply prepared European dishes that focus on beef and seafood.
